Pacific Wren at Goldstream

Goldstream Receives Reprieve

The province announced it is taking time to assess the environmental impact of widening the Malahat Highway and to perform a review later this year. First Nations will be partner to those discussions.

The work to have been performed included cutting into rock, building retaining walls against the river with extensions and the removal of some 700 trees.

W̱SÁNEĆ elder Carl Olsen has been beside the highway for the last 3 years protesting the project and raising the alarm to the environmental impact of the plan. He would be breathing a sigh of relief with the announcement along with many others.

While there are safety considerations that need to take place, the obvious would be for drivers to slow down and proceed with caution through this sensitive area. We can all work together to make this area safer for us, for fish and for wildlife.
