As a cornerstone species that is a major part of salmon and other marine predator diets, herring health and populations are critical to the ecosystem and maintaining biodiversity.
There is a lot of information available from organizations specializing in Herring, Salmon and various species affected by, or impacted by the herring population and their ability to spawn. A major factor in their decline is of course human activity and fishing.
